Hypercolor Trio, the New York-based avant-garde group, was formed almost two decades ago, but did no release a record until 2015. ‘It was worth the wait,’ wrote JazzTimes, the prestigious American magazine, ‘as the band lets fly with a rough-edged, wildly inventive amalgam of punkish melodic provocation and rhythmic adventurism that defies classification. Is it jazz? Rock? A funhouse-mirror monstrosity à la Frank Zappa? No matter what one calls it, it’s an undeniably daring and exhilarating ride.’ ‘Maoz provides the Israeli scales,’ wrote the reviewer of PopMatters. ‘Ilgenfritz was trained in jazz and classical traditions but calls himself a “noise-rock enthusiast.” Being a percussionist, Ligeti has soaked up considerable African polyrhythmic influences over time. And being the son of György Ligeti, he is plenty familiar with European modes.’
This concert of the Liszt Fest is presented by Müpa Budapest as a joint event with the Budapest Music Center.
