László Tihanyi is a composer who is also a leading figure in the Hungarian music scene as an educator and conductor. With almost a hundred compositions, his oeuvre is a towering accomplishment of the past four decades. In recent years, he has presented compelling pieces of musical theatre. The one-act Arabesque (2021) is a sequel to the story of Don Giovanni, in which Donna Elvira, now an old woman, recalls the events of the past. The Iron Box, his most recent work, looks at the secret affair of Ferenc Móra, the writer and museologist, and Ilona Kalmár, drawing on their letters and Móra’s works.
