Tomorrow Comes The Harvest was a project and record that grew out of the vision of Detroit DJ Jeff Mills, Nigerian drummer Tony Allen, a founder of Afrobeat, and veteran keyboardist Jean-Phi Dary. With Allen passing in 2020, Mills and Dary are joined by Indian tabla virtuoso Prabhu Edouard for their 17 October concert at Millenáris. Jeff Mills (60) is one of the most important figures on the Detroit minimal techno scene, alongside such veteran DJs as Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson.
As early as the beginning of the 1980s, he held a series of parties in Detroit, using the name The Wizard.
In 1989, he formed the Underground Resistance collective with Mike Banks, former bassist of the band Parliament.
In the 1990s, he moved from Detroit and spent extended periods in New York, Berlin and Chicago.
Mills came out with his first album, Waveform Transmission Vol. 1, in 1993. His more recent records have been released on the Axis label.
Eminem makes a reference to Mills in Groundhog Day, a song from The Marshall Mathers LP (2000).
Mills composed music for Fritz Lang’s 1929 film, Woman in the Moon. A great fan of the German director, he has also written music for Metropolis. For a few months in the 2010s, he was resident DJ at the Louvre in Paris, in the Egyptian wing of the famous museum. He also creates visual art and has exhibited numerous installations and sculptures.
Mills has been to Hungary several times, having performed at the Budapest Spring Festival, Balaton Sound and Sziget.
In 2018, he joined forces with legendary Nigerian Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen for a record, Tomorrow Comes The Harvest.
With Allen passing away in 2020, Mills used the Tomorrow Comes The Harvest moniker for the 2023 album Evolution, a joint effort with tabla player Prabhu Edouard and keyboardist Jean-Phi Dary.
