Bach and Michael Jackson – An Unconventional Portrait of Natalie Tenenbaum

25 September 2025

Natalie Tenenbaum seems to get a kick out of reinterpreting our attitude towards classical music. As we prepare for her concert on 20 October, we’ve collected 10 interesting facts about her – things that make her stand out among classical musicians.

1. It feels natural for her to include Bach and Michael Jackson, Liszt and Chris Isaak, in the same concert programme.

2. She wrote music for such Broadway super-productions as Mean Girls and Benjamin Button.

3. She strives for complete freedom: her albums give almost equal weight to light improvisations, jazz, pop and classical music.

4. Along with the most prestigious concert venues of classical music, she has performed in the Madison Square Garden, a tiny jazz café in Seoul and on Times Square.

5. She wrote the music of Red Dead Redemption 2, the hit western adventure game.

6. It is unusual for a concert pianist to break into song while playing, but she does sing excerpts from her favourite tunes at her performances.

7. She is decidedly active on social media; she has 130.000 followers on Instragram, which is unsurprising given the entertainment value of her short videos.

8. When it comes to looks, she once again defies pigeonholing, and she has been seen performing in suits and coats, a leather jacket and a tracksuit, even in a basketball jersey.

9. She likes to combine the piano with electronics and lighting, creating new forms of expression at the interface of classical music and improvisational jazz.

10. Her music is in the repertoire of the Steinway Spirio player piano, and can be listened to in original Steinway quality.
