Vakhtang Kakhidze, one of Georgia’s leading composers and conductors, completed his Requiem in 2021, dedicating the monumental work to the memory of his father, the legendary conductor, Jansug Kakhidze. Following its Tbilisi premiere, the composition was performed to great acclaim in major Western European cities. ‘I wanted to prove that Western classical music and Georgian polyphonic folk music go well together,’ the composer said in an interview, explaining why, in addition to personal motivation, he turned to a genre as traditional as the funeral mass. Accordingly, the music of the composition blends the European chordal vocabulary with the tone of traditional Georgian music, and the Latin mass also includes passages sung in Georgian. The distinctive colours of Georgian traditional music will be added to the performance of the Hungarian groups by the Rustavi Ensemble and the Chanters Quartet.
